Is my facility a good fit for battery storage?

Some plants are great candidates and some aren’t, and it’s better to know which before anyone spends time on a proposal. Answer six quick questions and submit your details to see your fit result and request a free assessment.

  1. 01

It starts with the electric bill

Most commercial and industrial bills include a demand charge: a fee set by your single busiest 15 minutes (on most rates) of the month. That is what a battery cuts, so the bigger the bill, the more there is to cut. If you spend more than $10K a month on electricity, it’s worth a call.

  2. 02

Spikes matter more than total use

A battery covers short bursts, like a compressor kicking on or several machines starting at once, so the meter sees much less of them. A plant that draws the same power all day has less to shave.

  3. 03

    In Massachusetts, programs pay too

Eversource and National Grid customers can earn program payments for discharging during grid peaks. What you earn depends on program eligibility and performance.

01About how much is your monthly electric bill?

Electricity only. A typical month is fine.

02Where is the facility, and who is the utility?
03When does the facility run?
04What does your power use look like?

Think compressors, CNC machines, welders, presses, furnaces and chillers. Count sustained peaks, not a split-second motor startup.

05Do you have solar on site?
06What runs most of your process energy?

What we hear on calls

We run 24/7 with a flat load. Does peak shaving still help?

Peak shaving usually helps less than it does at a facility with sharp peaks. A flat load leaves fewer high intervals to shave and can leave less time to recharge. Time-of-use shifting or eligible program payments may still add value. We compare your load and tariff before recommending a system.

Our shift ends at 4pm, so we already miss the peak. Is a battery still worth it?

It depends on your tariff. Ending at 4 pm can avoid some evening charges, but other demand charges can still follow a morning or daytime peak. We check the billing hours and each demand component against a full year of your interval data.

Can a battery handle big CNC machines or startup spikes?

Yes, that is where it does best. The utility averages your power over 15-minute blocks, so a one-second motor inrush barely registers. What sets the bill is a sustained burst, like several machines, a compressor and a furnace coming on together. A battery discharges through that burst so the meter sees a lower, flatter line. The system is sized to how big and how long your peaks are.

Does the battery have to run my whole plant?

No. The grid keeps supplying the plant as it does today. The battery covers only the top slice of your demand during peaks, which is why it can be much smaller than your total load. It is not a backup generator, and your operations do not change.

Battery storage vs. a generator

Most of our energy is natural gas. Does this apply?

It depends on your electric bill, not your gas bill. Gas-fired furnaces and boilers still run electric fans, blowers, pumps and compressors that set demand peaks. If the electric bill alone is over $10K+/month, it is worth a look.

What if our electric bill is smaller than that?

Demand savings alone usually will not pay for a system, but there are exceptions: a very spiky load, a high-demand-charge rate, or program payments in Massachusetts. Send a bill and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth going further.

How do we get a real answer?

The fit result is a rough read. A real answer comes from a year of 15-minute interval data from your utility: we model your actual peaks against your actual rate and show system options, projected savings and payback. The assessment is free.
